IDS Getting Closer to a Coalition with SDP

Total Croatia News

A political coalition between IDS and SDP edges ever closer.

It is still not known when will the SDP-led coalition sign a new agreement. The partners, especially HNS, have been putting pressure on Zoran Milanović for some time, but the final agreement has still not been signed. And it seems that we will have to wait for some more time, since SDP has decided to give one more chance to IDS. The first opportunity for another conversation between Zoran Milanović and IDS president Boris Miletić will happen in Barban as early as tomorrow, reports Vecernji List on August 22, 2015.

That small town in Istria will host the traditional festival Trka Na Prstenac, and almost all the leaders of the Kukuriku coalition will be there. There is a possibility that on Sunday the final agreement on new coalition will be reached.

“We are not planning any formal talks, but we will certainly talk about the elections. There is nothing more to add, we expect the internal bodies of IDS to make a decision about whether they will enter the coalition in early September. They have our invitation, the doors to our coalition are wide open, and there are no more open issues. I expect that the SDP-led coalition, strengthened with the Labour Party, will achieve another landslide victory in parliamentary elections”, said Željko Jovanović, a member of the SDP Presidency and the SDP election coordinator for the eighth parliamentary constituency.

On the other hand, at the beginning of August IDS appointed a three-member negotiation team which is tasked with arranging a new pre-election coalition. However, IDS unofficially stated that the team will talk not only with SDP, but also with other potential partners and that their main goal is to agree a better electoral manifesto, rather than to win seats in parliament.

What is already known for some time is that SDP offered them three safe seats in the eighth constituency and one marginal seat in the seventh constituency. President of the Forward Croatia Party and former Croatian president Ivo Josipović has also been negotiating with IDS. Earlier this week, he signed a coalition agreement with Radimir Čačić and his Reformists. Interestingly, Josipović will also be present in Barbir and will perhaps try to win over IDS to his side.
