The City Walls surround the old town of Dubrovnik. They are 1940 meters long; 1,5 to 6 meters wide, and 25 meters high. The first circlet of walls was built in the 8th century, but as the city expanded, so did the walls. These dimension date from the 13th century, although the shape and some of the dimension changes date from the 17th century.
There are three entrances to the walls: next to the church of Holy Savior, through the fortress of St. John, and next the the church of St. Luke. The walls contain not only the walls, but fortresses and bastions as well. Their main features are, however, Minceta on the north, Revelin on the northeast, St. John on the southeast, and Bokar on the southwest part.
