The Church of Holy Saviour - Dubrovnik

by Natasa Lujic
(Dubrovnik,Croatia)

The Church of Holy Saviour was built as a votive offering to commemorate the victims of the earthquake of 1520. It was being built from 1520 to 1528 in a renaissance style with a few elements of the gothic style. It is situated between the entrance to the Franciscan monastery and the entrance to the City Walls.

During the time it was being built, even the noblemen and their wives were carrying the stones and wood for the construction of the church. It was built by local arquitect Petar Andrijić .The fasade of the church is divided into three parts, and ends with a three-arch gable. In the center of the fasade, there is a very decorative rosette, the only window on the fasade.

The fasade of this church served as an exemplary fasade for other churches, such as the Cathedral in Šibenik, or the St. Mary's church in Zadar, etc. Today at the church of Holy Saviour you may enjoy exhibited artwork, concerts, and attend a mass that is being held only once a year, on a day of the Big earthquake.
