Dubrovnik - The Large Onofrian Fountain

by Natasa Lujic
(Dubrovnik,Croatia)

Built in 1438 by the Neapolitan hydro-engineer Onofrio della Cava, who created the city's first mains water supply by pumping water 12 kilometers from Rijeka Dubrovacka, to gush from this fountain

The fountain is in fact a large tank, a pool with 16 sides, surrounded and decorated with 16 columnes, one at each side, with maskerons that spill water. The capitels used to be ornated with statues of animals, but only one of those has remained. At the bottom of the fountain, there is a drainage channel.
