A selection of the best books on Croatia

We are delighted to introduce the books on Croatia section, where we will be bringing you the widest selection of Croatian books in English on the web, coupled with reviews and the chance to order online.

In addition to the standard tomes on travel, language and history, we have looked into some more obscure regional varieties, and whatever your requirements, there will be something for you, whether it be a delightful 25 walks from Starigrad on Hvar, a free downloadable entertaining guide to surviving Croatia as a foreigner, learning more about British travellers in past times in Dalmatia, or some traditional Croatian recipes, you will find them here. This section will grow with your help, so don't be shy! We are particularly grateful to the team from www.books-croatia.com for unearthing and reviewing some really interesting books on Croatia.

1. History

This section will be expanded its own standalone section soon, but we kick off with a debt of gratitide to Martin Mayhew from www.books-croatia.com for this excellent selection of books on various aspects of history in Croatia, all accompanied by a review. Thanks Martin!

In no particular order (the site is still being built - launch in November), the selection includes - Dalmatia under Venetian rule, a collection of historical maps of Dalmatia from the archives in Zadar, a history of the city of Rijeka, a stimulating read on the issues of Balkan identity and the BEST book on the history of the Balkans by Misha Glenny, in our humble, subjective opinion.

An interesting tome on the heritage of Rab is one of several regional books we will be highlighting. An excellent guide to Croatia's archaeological sites and aspects of art, architectual and cultural heritage are both good reads, as is this excellent account on Croatian immigrants.

Vivian submitted this authoritative work, Croatia Through History by Branka Magas.

2. Nature

Two excellent nature books on Croatia, one on the Eurasian griffon and this eco-centre on Cres.

3. Language

Learning Croatian and Celia Hawkesworth have become synonymous - here's why. Martin recommends this dictionary and this pocket version.

4. Literature

An initial selection of literature (to be expanded massively soon) includes an account of a British woman marrying a politician in Zagreb in the 1940', (Two Lines of Life, a study of the Balkans through Western literary eyes, (Imagining the Balkans) a humorous account of a Swedish husband's account of buying properyt in Istria with his Croatian wife (A House in Istria) and a collection of Croatian short stories.

And here are some interesting thoughts on the relationship between Shakespeare and Dalmatia.

5. Travel

In the soon to be expanded travel section, we have some initial submissions on a guide to the coast, a travelogue of Cres and Lošinjand Rebecca West's classic Black Lamb and Grey Falcon.

A useful book for sailing enthusiasts will appear to a specialist group, as will this diving guide through the wrecks in the Adriatic. For a more leisurely holiday, this walking guide is invaluable.

A couple of interesting historical accounts about British travellers in Dalmatia and some fascinating accounts of Rijeka in old Engish travel books.

And finally for now, some great travel books on Cres and Losinj, Pag and Korcula.

6. Guide books
