Books: Nature - Tramuntana

by Martin Mayhew

Title: Tramuntana
Author: Goran Sušić
Publisher: Eko-center Caput Insulae Beli, 56pp, 2006
ISBN: 9539816750

The northern part of the island of Cres, in the Kvarner Bay is known as Tramuntana. This beautiful forested region is full of myths, legends and folklore dating back centuries. Beli - the largest, oldest settlement of Tramuntana, is the home of the Eko-center Caput Insulae Beli which is a research, volunteer centre for the protection of nature and the largest colony of griffon vultures in the country.

The centre has created a network of seven nature trails and labyrinths through the forest and meadows of Tramuntana for researchers, visitors and tourists. This book is a detailed guide to one of the trails. It features the sights, myths, folklore, history, animal and plants species which you can experience whilst on the trail and is beautifully illustrated throughout. There's also a map of all the trails and a handy map of the island of Cres.
